CUMBERLAND — Gerald Steven Singleton, 68, of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born May 31, 1943, in Cumberland, Mr. Singleton was the son of the late Calvin David Singleton and Genevieve Marie (Teeter) Singleton.  He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frederick, Ralph, and Ronald Singleton; two sisters, Goldie Karol and Catherine Simmons; and his former wife, Marylin R. (Jones) Singleton, Feb. 21, 1993.

Jerry enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 7, 1961, and retired on December 31, 1988.  He began his Air Force career as a security policeman and ended his career as Chief Enlisted Manager for the Office of the Chief of Security Police, Tactical Air Command.  His decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters; the Air Force Commendation Medal; the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one oak leaf cluster; the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven oak leaf clusters; the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbons with five oak leaf clusters; the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and numerous other ribbons.

Jerry’s permanent assignments took him to many places throughout the world which included, Azores Portugal; Thailand; Panama; California; Texas; and Virginia.  His temporary duty assignments included several trips to Vietnam, Iceland, and numerous bases in the USA.  He loved working with people and also knowing that his untiring efforts were protecting the security of our nation.

Jerry was a member of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion; the Henry Hart Post 1411 V.F.W.; the Good Fellowship Club; and the Cumberland Outdoor Club.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Daniel S. Singleton, England and Christopher A. Singleton, Austin, Texas; his daughter, Lisa J. Ford, Galveston, Texas; his brothers, Benjamin Singleton and wife, Dorothy, Cumberland, Ted Singleton and wife, Wanda, Flintstone, and Daniel Singleton and wife, Julia, Conowingo; his sisters, Sandra K. Powell, Darlington, Mary E. Street, Rising Sun, and Linda S. Thompson, Darlington; and his grandchildren, William S. Singleton, Mary L. Ford, and Rachel Ford.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at 1 p.m. with American Legion Chaplain Robert Lloyd officiating.

Interment will be in Glendale Cemetery.

Military honors will be conducted by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
